Dr. Beckenstein's Skills and Qualifications
Dr. Beckenstein earned his Bachelor's degree from Union College in New York and went on to graduate from Eastern Virginia Medical School. After completing an internship and a residency in general surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey, he then completed a residency in plastic surgery and a 6 month research fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Unlike many plastic surgeons in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Beckenstein chose to continue his formal training upon completion of his plastic surgery residency. Over the next 4 years, he completed 3 additional fellowships in breast surgery and aesthetic surgery methods. He completed a breast reconstruction fellowship in Atlanta under Dr. Carl Hartrampf Jr., a widely-recognized authority on breast reconstruction. Dr. Beckenstein also completed a fellowship in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery through the Department of Plastic Surgery at Georgetown University and a fellowship in breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery in Birmingham under the supervision of Dr. James C. Grotting.

Giving Back to the Community
In addition to serving his cosmetic surgery patients, Dr. Beckenstein has been recognized for his efforts to raise breast cancer awareness in the Birmingham community. He was recently awarded the BMW Ultimate Drive Local Hero award, given in conjunction with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This award recognized his work with the Breast Surgery Center of Alabama, a facility Dr. Beckenstein operates along with his practice in order to provide women fighting breast cancer with the care, physical therapy, and emotional support they deserve. Dr. Beckenstein is proud to give back to the community that has given so much to him.
